CHAPTER 32

Oscar and Molly hiked through the bird zone—the last restricted area before they’d reach the shore and the Giant Stones.

Birds were chirping and singing in all the trees.

“This is nice,” observed Oscar, taking in a deep breath, filling his snout with the sweet scents of the forest. “Nobody trying to chase us out of their zone. Nobody attacking us. Because all the birds are up there, in the trees and the sky and—”

As Oscar pointed up, a gunky white glob splattered him in his right eye.

“I’m glad this isn’t the flying cow zone,” he whimpered as he wiped the sticky bird poo off his face.

Molly was also gazing up into the trees. Dozens and dozens of birds were sitting in the branches, singing their songs. Building their nests. Fluffing their feathers. A few were in a shallow puddle of water, splashing around, taking a bird bath.

And Molly was drooling.

“Molly?” said Oscar. “Focus. This is not the snack food aisle at the supermarket. This is simply a zone we must cross to reach our ultimate destination: the Giant Stones where we’ll find Romaldo and Violet.”

“This is so unfair,” Molly pouted. “What if we were hiking through the dogg biscuit zone?”

“Um, I don’t think crunchy cookies ever come to the Eastern Wilderness Reserve on vacation. They’d get soggy, fast.”

“Fine,” said Molly. “I’ll just close my eyes, shut out all temptation, and follow after you.”

“Great. Grab my tail. I’ll lead the way.”

Molly took the tip of Oscar’s tail into her paw and they shuffled forward.

“You know,” said Oscar, “we work together pretty good.”

“Only because we have to.”

“Yeah. I guess so. Although I kind of, sort of enjoy it …”

“Me, too,” said Molly. “Temporarily.”

“True. Wouldn’t want it to become, you know, an everyday thing.”

“That would just be weird. Ouch.” Molly, with her eyes closed, didn’t see the rock waiting to stub her paw.

“Hang on,” said Oscar. “I smell something.”

“So do I,” said Molly. “Probably because I’m holding up your tail and walking behind you.”

Oscar’s nose started working overtime. He sniffed something. Something important.

“Oscar?” said Molly. “I hear you snorting. What’s up?”

“The air! It smells familiar. Cedar and vanilla. Cousin Romaldo! He uses fur moisturizer. Excuse me. I’m on the trail of a smell and I’ve gotta sniff it.”

Oscar dropped down to all fours and, wiggling the wet tip of his nose to open his nostrils wide, started snuffling along the ground.
